What is the cost of a wedding?

What is a wedding loan?

A wedding loan is a personal loan used to cover the costs of your big day—and everything that comes with it. From venue deposits and catering to attire, travel, or even the honeymoon, a personal loan gives you upfront funds that you repay over time in fixed monthly payments.

You can use it for:

  • Venue and vendor bookings

  • Catering and bar services

  • Wedding dress and attire

  • Photography and entertainment

  • Travel and honeymoon expenses

  • Decorations, rentals, or coordination services

The pros and cons of a wedding loan

Wedding loans come with a few benefits and drawbacks.

Pros:

  • With excellent credit, you may qualify for low interest rates.

  • You can sometimes get funding the same day or the next business day.

  • Loan funds are deposited directly into your bank account.

Cons:

  • A credit check is required, and a hard credit inquiry could drop your credit score.

  • You’ll need a good credit history to qualify for the best rates.

  • If you have fair credit (or bad credit), you may need a cosigner.

Is a wedding loan right for you?

Weddings are special—and often expensive. A wedding loan might be worth considering if:

  • You want to lock in vendors and deposits now, but pay over time

  • You prefer a single, predictable monthly payment

  • You don’t want to carry credit card balances post-wedding

  • You’ve created a budget and are borrowing only what you need

As with any major purchase, it’s important to borrow responsibly. But if the loan helps you create the day you want, it could be a helpful tool.

How to get a wedding loan

You can get wedding loans from credit unions and banks, as well as many online lenders. Here’s what the process looks like.

  1. Pull your credit report. Check your creditworthiness through annualcreditreport.com. You’ll need a high credit score to meet the eligibility standards for most personal loans.

  2. Consider your loan options. Different lenders offer different loan rates and loan terms. Be sure to consider the annual percentage rate (APR), which includes any origination fees. Also check for late fees and prepayment penalties, as well as perks like autopay discounts.

  3. Prequalify. Prequalification lets you see what rates you qualify for without incurring a hard credit check.

  4. Apply. When you’ve selected a lender, it’s time to start the application process. You’ll need to provide your loan purpose, preferred loan amount, cosigner details (if applicable), and whether you want a variable or fixed rate.

  5. Review the loan offer. Double-check the repayment terms and make sure you can afford the monthly payment.

Wedding planning tips (and when a loan can help)

  • Set a total wedding budget first, then see where a loan might fill the gap

  • Use a personal loan to avoid high-interest credit card charges

  • Borrow only what you need—leave room for unexpected expenses

  • Consider using the loan to secure early bird pricing or avoid last-minute surcharges
